Like Sushmita Thakare Jain promised last time, today it is all about Social Media Rules for your favourite social media networks! Her blog posts are always full of useful information and this one contains some practical recommendations for social media in general and for the main six social networks in particular – Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest and Instagram.
Since the list is too long, without wasting time let’s begin.
Rules for all social networks in General
Reply back to all comments as quickly as you can
According to research conducted by Lithium Technologies, around 53 percent of social media users that tweet at a brand expect to receive a response in under 60 minutes.
Of all the social networks Twitter is the most real-time platform. Though, timely responses are crucial on Twitter they are equally encouraged on other networks as well.
Always obey the 80/20 rule!
You must always Entertain plus inform your audience first, sell to them second.
Whichever platform you choose, what matters is providing content which will engage the audience, right?
Have you watched YouTube commercials closely? They are so entertaining, like the most viewed add of 2016 ‘Mobile Strike’s Super Bowl’ commercial racked up more than 100 million views not because they were selling a mobile game but because of its factor of entertainment. Don’t just promote your products to buy, provide it value them some may think about it!
Always Use first person plural, when you are talking about
your company brand example ‘We or Us’
When for example posting on your Business Facebook page use we to address your brand rather than I. Example ‘we offer you with Logo designs which connect with your Business Vision.’
Never abandon any of your social media accounts
You may say this seems obvious, right?
Still, I have come across many businesses who have created their pages or twitter account and just abandoned them, reason, when asked, is since everyone has one we created ours too just to mention on our website. That for me signifies, if one cannot put in efforts to maintain their Brand value how effective long term relations will they provide?
Have complete and up to date Business Profiles
If you go and check only across Facebook one can easily find incomplete Facebook pages. By having a complete Facebook page, the potential audience can get a sight of what the company is about before they choose to Like you.
Further lets now talk about the specific networks
Don’t send automated direct message to people that follow you promoting your links.
I had tried it once however as soon as I received few from others too I realised the reaction of the receiver and hence stopped it at once.
Automation is a good option but spamming with links is different.
Provide more context in your tweets.
With Twitter’s latest update the fuss is all just related to increased characters for tweets. However what I find even more fun is, the ability to poll with your community an easy way to gather data, plus the inclusion of GIFs in tweets makes it so much fun, and of course trend of current time sharing plus connecting via Periscope broadcasts in Tweets.
Don’t steal another company’s hashtag, in fact, work in making your owned.
Don’t know how many of you have noticed many on Twitter try to snoop in the hashtag of brands to appear in search results. I suggest instead, as you are growing your social media presence same way work to build your own hashtag as your identity.
Don’t buy followers, try to produce an organic community for high engagement.
Online one can easily find apps which offer you followers in exchange or as per the amount you pay. Next time when you try and fall for it think of quality over quantity that will help you.
Don’t pack your tweets full with only keywords.
Another trap many fall into for gaining high engagement. Stop focusing on high reach, focus on high engagement which comes handy with good quality content. As the content engagement increases, so does your reach.
Do not Like your own post.
Apparently the reason people do it is to have the first like hence inviting others; however, I do not see any logic behind it. Do you?
Some also do the same after some time has passed by to bring the post back in the feed.
Do not post or tag photos of fans, customers, or even your employees without prior permission.
Before uploading and image of your customer or even your employee always take prior permission, in fact, it is even mentioned in guidelines of some websites.
Do not tag people or pages which aren’t related to your post.
Don’t run behind every person you know asking for Likes, Comments, or Shares.
I have my timeline review filled with posts I am tagged in, even though I may not be related to them, and that bugs me. One must stop that.
Personalise your connection requests.
Tell them WHY you’re connecting. Let it be a relationship rather than being a just a connection
Once you are connected, send a “welcome” message to initiate the conversation.
I won’t say practice this exercise for all connections, though one must for at least follow it when you get connected with an influencer. That will help you initiate the conversation with them.
Don’t as soon as you join groups start marketing yourself.
Just like any other network do not promote yourself as soon as you get accepted in any group. First, connect with the members build an audience for your posts then with intervals of the time try and promote your work.
Try and use this platform.
When was the last time you accessed your G+ account? Many I know do not.
However, remember Google plus is important for SEO.
When sharing the post, always remember to add your own annotation for it.
That way you add a comment or message for the audience to connect with the share.
Share to specific Circles to well target your content.
If you are interested in sharing content with a specified audience, this is the way to go for on G+.
Sharing to a Circle on G+ is just like Direct Messaging a particular group of people.
Provide good descriptions with keywords for your pins.
This helps in showing up in search results for the audience looking for the same.
Always remember to link back to the source and give credits.
This helps the original author to support the thread, plus it’s a polite way to give attribution and credit to the creator.
For the sake of high pin, rate don’t use any images that have nothing to do with your content.
Pinterest users may be attracted by the pictures, however, if they mix up the message conveyed the pin rates are bound to drop.
Don’t pin only your own material.
Showcasing only pins from your website will not be the ice breaker, instead, create particular boards highlighting your blog posts or content. Rest, pin from a wide variety of sources.
Do not ask people to follow, like, or COMMENT.
Instead, connect with like-minded or similar niche accounts to create Instagram pods to help promote each other.
Don’t over gram.
No one likes their feed to be filled up with only one user. I follow one gram per day as per my highest engagement time.
Hashtag usage as per your brand plus related to the content you share for the like-minded to find it as well. Like for example, #smm is used by social media marketers.
However, use only relevant hashtags.
